Process Steps

Step 1 

Applicants prepare a letter  requesting approval to import coffee providing details of supplier, quantity, and type of coffee

 

Step 2

An application letter is received 

 

Step 3

 Importer submits sample

 

Step 4

Coffee sample received 

 
Step 5 Coffee Board review coffee supply in the Jamaican market  

Step 6

Quality Assurance department tests coffee sample and prepares analysis 

 
Step 7  A recommendation is  prepared based on  market supply and test results  
Step 8

If  recommended for import then :

i) A recommendation is submitted to MICAF Minister for consideration 

ii) MICAF Minister considers import application 

iii)  Minister prepared a letter to Coffee Board recommending approval or rejection 

iv)  Ministerial letter received

If coffee is not recommended for import 

i) The applicant is notified in writing that application will not be approved 

ii) A letter advising importation is not permitted is received 

 
Step 9

If  the Minister does not approve import then:

i) The applicant is notified in writing that application will not be approved 

ii) A letter advising importation is not permitted is received 

If the Minister approves import then:

i) An application is made for import permit on behalf of the importer

ii) PQD consider import permit

iii) Import Permit received 

iv) PQD Import Permit is provided to the importer 

v) PQD Import Permit is received 

vi) Letter granting Import permission received 

vii) Coffee Board prepares an import approval letter providing details of the coffee import permitted and sends the importer and Jamaica Customs Agency

ix) Letter advising coffee import permission received

1 Permit for the Importation of Coffee An import permit is required from the Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA) prior to the importation of coffee beans and any by- products of coffee. All coffee related products imported into Jamaica require an import permit under the law - Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA) Act 2017. 2 Licensing Requirement for Local Coffee Importer A Local Importer licence needs to be obtained from the Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA) prior to the importation of finished coffee products. A local coffee importer is required under the law -Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA) Act 2017 to obtain this licence Licensing Requirement Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA) Required for coffee importers who intend to import finished coffee products only. 3 Foreign Importer Licence - Coffee Required for persons who operate outside of Jamaica and trade in green or roasted coffee beans. As a prerequisite, the Foreign Importer must state the name(s) and address(es) of the local supplier(s) of green or roasted beans, who must possess a valid Dealers Licence. They are also required to state the name(s) and address(es) of person or entities to which the green or roasted coffee beans will be supplied. Foreign Importers are also holders of a Trademark User Licence.
